چکیده

This study presents the spatial and temporal grounddeformation pattern of the Nisyros-Yali volcanic field after the period of the seismic crisis (1996-1998) based on the local GPS network remeasurement and the analysis of Interferometric data (2003-2010) applying the SqueeSAR technique. The GPS results indicated intense subsidence in the northern and central parts of Nisyros that caused the western and eastern flanks of the island to “collapse” towards its center. The observed LOS velocity field of the SqueeSAR analysis revealed a nearly linear type of ground deformation, exhibiting values ranging between -3 to +3mm/yr with small standard deviations. The interferometric results have also shown subsidence along the northern and central parts of the island, and an inherent eastward horizontal component at its southeastern part. The overall pattern of the observed subsidence in the area after 2000 is consistent with decrease of pressure in the associated magma chambers and hydrothermal system. Orthophoto generation using IKONOS imagery and high-resolution DEM: a case study on volcanic hazard monitoring of Nisyros Island (Greece)

Georeferenced high-resolution satellite images can be used for acquisition of topographic information, navigation and visualisation for various environmental studies. The present study is part of the multidisciplinary EU project GEOWARN related to monitoring, warning and emergency planning for volcanic hazards in the island of Nisyros, Greece. Here, the main aim was the orthorectification of a ...

A geo-spatial data management system for potentially active volcanoes - GEOWARN project

Integrated studies of active volcanic systems for the purpose of long-term monitoring and forecast and short-term eruption prediction require large numbers of data-sets from various disciplines. A modern database concept has been developed for managing and analyzing multi-disciplinary volcanological data-sets. The GEOWARN project (choosing the ‘‘Kos–Yali–Nisyros–Tilos volcanic field, Greece’’ a...

Volcano Deformation Monitoring Using GPS

Volcanic eruptions are often very destructive events, having a massive impact on the natural and human environment. In order to mitigate the effect of volcanic hazards such as pyroclastic flows, lahars and tsunamis it is necessary to closely monitor volcanoes. Ground surface deformation is recognised as a reliable indicator of an impending eruption and can give clues to magmatic processes at de...
